Mortgage and Income Documentation
Q. I am currently applying for a loan and need copies of my paystubs. Where can I get those? I checked online but can’t find them.
A. When I did support for PaycheckCity.com, I can’t tell you how many times I was asked that question. Everything from:
- How do I get my paystubs to
- What does my W-4 say to
- I lost my W-2. Can you get me a new copy?
was asked to the support team of a website run by a private company! The easiest answer to this is to maintain an adequate filing system yourself of pertinent documents like old paystubs or W-2s and even copies of the W-4s that you give to your employer. It is obviously not unheard of to see employers go out of business shortly after you leave the company. How will you get those records in that case? When you keep your own records, it’s a simple process to retrieve them and provide them to the necessary individual.
Employers are the only ones who have access to your payroll documents. If you have several former employers and you need copies of W-2s or pay stubs when applying for a loan, you must approach each past employer and ask for copies from that job only. Here are several facts:
- You cannot go to your current employer and get W-2 and paystubs from past employers.
- You cannot go to a website from a search engine and have them help you.
- You should not provide personal information to an unknown entity when looking for copies of documents.
- Online searching only works if you are in the employee website where your documents were stored. Google (or any other search engine) does not index private internal company databases.
Perhaps this post is more of rant. However, if my experience is similar to the support departments at any other payroll websites, there is a huge risk of identity theft lurking when employees request this information and send their own personal data with the request.
